TypeScript introduces several basic types that you can use to annotate variables:

```typescript
// Explicitly typed variables
let name: string = "John";
let age: number = 30;
let isStudent: boolean = false;
```

### Functions and Parameters

Functions can also have explicit type annotations for both parameters and return values:

```typescript
function add(a: number, b: number): number {
  return a + b;
}
const result = add(5, 10); // result is inferred as number
```

### Interfaces

Interfaces in TypeScript define the structure of objects, ensuring that they have specific properties with designated data types:

```typescript
interface Person {
  name: string;
  age: number;
}
const person: Person = {
  name: "Alice",
  age: 25,
};
```

### Arrays and Generics

Arrays can hold elements of specific types, and TypeScript supports generics to provide type safety for collections:

```typescript
const numbers: number[] = [1, 2, 3];
const names: Array<string> = ["John", "Alice"];
```

### Union and Intersection Types

TypeScript supports union and intersection types, allowing you to combine types or require multiple types:

```typescript
type ID = number | string; // Union type
type Employee = Person & { position: string }; // Intersection type
```

### Introduction

In the intricate world of modern web development, managing the state of your React applications can be both challenging and essential. Proper state management not only prevents bugs and inconsistencies but also contributes to creating scalable, maintainable, and responsive user interfaces. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the core concepts of React state management, explore various approaches and libraries, and offer best practices to help you make informed decisions for your projects.

### Understanding State in React

State represents the dynamic data that can change over time and affect your application's behavior and UI. In React, each component can have its own state, and changes to the state trigger re-renders, updating the UI to reflect the new data.

### Built-In State Management with useState

React's built-in `useState` hook is a fundamental tool for managing local component state. It allows you to initialize and update state within functional components:

```JSX
import React, { useState } from 'react';
function Counter() {
  const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
  const increment = () => {
    setCount(count + 1);
  };
  return (
    <div>
      <p>Count: {count}</p>
      <button onClick={increment}>Increment</button>
    </div>
  );
}
```

### Challenges with Local State

While `useState` is sufficient for managing simple state within a component, it can become cumbersome for larger applications with complex state dependencies or when sharing state between multiple components.

### Global State Management with Redux

Redux is a popular state management library that addresses these challenges by providing a centralized store for your application's state. It uses a predictable state container, a set of reducers to handle state changes, and actions to trigger those changes:

```JSX
// Define action types and creators
const INCREMENT = 'INCREMENT';
const incrementAction = () => ({ type: INCREMENT });
// Define a reducer
const initialState = { count: 0 };
const counterReducer = (state = initialState, action) => {
  switch (action.type) {
    case INCREMENT:
      return { ...state, count: state.count + 1 };
    default:
      return state;
  }
};
// Create a Redux store
const store = createStore(counterReducer);
// Connect components to the store using react-redux
```

### Context API and useContext

For simpler state management needs, React's Context API, coupled with the `useContext` hook, provides a lightweight alternative to Redux. It allows you to share state across multiple components without the need for prop drilling:

```JSX
import React, { createContext, useContext, useState } from 'react';
const MyContext = createContext();
function ParentComponent() {
  const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
  return (
    <MyContext.Provider value={{ count, setCount }}>
      <ChildComponent />
    </MyContext.Provider>
  );
}
function ChildComponent() {
  const { count, setCount } = useContext(MyContext);
  return (
    <div>
      <p>Count: {count}</p>
      <button onClick={() => setCount(count + 1)}>Increment</button>
    </div>
  );
}
```

### Choosing the Right State Management Approach

When deciding on a state management approach for your React application, consider factors like the complexity of your application's state, the need for reusability, and the trade-offs between simplicity and centralized management. For smaller projects, built-in hooks like `useState` and the Context API might be sufficient, while larger and more complex applications could benefit from Redux or other external libraries.

### Conclusion

Effective state management is the backbone of well-structured and maintainable React applications. By understanding the principles of local and global state management, exploring libraries like Redux, and embracing the Context API, you can make informed decisions that align with your project's requirements. With the right approach to state management, you'll create applications that are not only responsive and efficient but also robust and easy to maintain.

### Introduction

As the backbone of modern web applications, APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) play a pivotal role in facilitating communication between different software systems. RESTful APIs, in particular, have become the standard for designing web services that are scalable, flexible, and easily consumable. In this guide, we'll take you through the process of building RESTful APIs using Node.js, from setting up the basics to handling requests, implementing CRUD operations, and ensuring security.

### Understanding RESTful APIs

Representational State Transfer (REST) is an architectural style for designing networked applications. RESTful APIs adhere to a set of principles that emphasize the use of standard HTTP methods, stateless communication, and resource-based interactions. This design philosophy simplifies the way clients interact with servers, making APIs intuitive and developer-friendly.

### Setting Up the Project

To begin building your RESTful API with Node.js, start by setting up a new project. Use npm or yarn to initialize your project and install necessary dependencies, such as Express:

```Shell
npm init -y
npm install express
```

### Handling Requests with Express

Express is a popular Node.js framework that simplifies the creation of web applications, including RESTful APIs. Define routes for your API's endpoints and handle requests using Express's built-in router:

```JavaScript
const express = require('express');
const app = express();
const PORT = 3000;
app.use(express.json());
app.get('/api/users', (req, res) => {
  // Retrieve and send user data
});
app.post('/api/users', (req, res) => {
  // Create a new user based on the request body
});
// Define other routes for PUT, DELETE, etc.
```

### Implementing CRUD Operations

CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations are fundamental to most APIs. Using Express, you can easily implement these operations:

```JavaScript
// Create
app.post('/api/users', (req, res) => {
  // Create a new user based on the request body
});
// Read
app.get('/api/users/:id', (req, res) => {
  // Retrieve and send user data based on the provided ID
});
// Update
app.put('/api/users/:id', (req, res) => {
  // Update user data based on the provided ID and request body
});
// Delete
app.delete('/api/users/:id', (req, res) => {
  // Delete a user based on the provided ID
});
```

### Handling Errors and Validation

Effective error handling and input validation are crucial for a reliable API. Use middleware and libraries like `express-validator` to ensure that data passed to your API is accurate and secure:

```JavaScript
const { body, validationResult } = require('express-validator');
app.post(
  '/api/users',
  [
    body('name').notEmpty(),
    body('email').isEmail(),
    // Add more validation rules
  ],
  (req, res) => {
    const errors = validationResult(req);
    if (!errors.isEmpty()) {
      return res.status(400).json({ errors: errors.array() });
    }
    // Create a new user based on the validated request body
  }
);
```

### Conclusion

Building RESTful APIs with Node.js and Express empowers you to create scalable, well-structured, and secure web services. By following REST principles, handling CRUD operations, ensuring validation and security, you can craft APIs that enable seamless communication between your applications and external clients. With the power of Node.js at your fingertips, you're equipped to build robust and reliable APIs that power the next generation of web applications.

### Introduction

Server-Side Rendering (SSR) is a powerful technique that can significantly improve the performance and search engine optimization (SEO) of web applications. Next.js, a popular React framework, offers built-in support for SSR, making it easy to implement this technique in your projects. In this post, we'll explore the benefits of SSR, delve into how it works with Next.js, and provide code examples to help you get started.

### Understanding Server-Side Rendering

Server-Side Rendering involves rendering web pages on the server before sending them to the client's browser. This results in faster initial page loads, improved SEO, and better performance for users with slower network connections. In traditional client-side rendering, the browser receives an empty shell of a web page, which is then populated with content using JavaScript. SSR, on the other hand, delivers fully-rendered HTML content directly to the browser.

### The Benefits of SSR

1. **Improved Performance**: SSR reduces the time it takes for a web page to become interactive, as the server delivers pre-rendered HTML content. Users experience faster load times, resulting in a smoother and more engaging user experience.

2. **Search Engine Optimization (SEO)**: Search engines index content from HTML documents. With SSR, search engines can easily crawl and index your web pages, improving your site's SEO and discoverability.

3. **Enhanced User Experience**: Users with slower network connections or less powerful devices benefit from SSR, as they receive a more complete and interactive page faster.

### SSR with Next.js: How It Works

Next.js simplifies SSR by providing a straightforward API and file structure. When a user requests a page, the server fetches the necessary data, renders the page, and sends back the fully-rendered HTML to the client.

### Implementing SSR with Next.js

To implement SSR in a Next.js application, you can create a file named `getServerSideProps.js` within the `pages` directory. This file exports a function called `getServerSideProps` that fetches data from an API and returns it as props for your component:

```JSX
// pages/getServerSideProps.js
import React from 'react';
function ServerSideProps({ data }) {
  return (
    <div>
      {/* Render content using the fetched data */}
    </div>
  );
}
export async function getServerSideProps() {
  const response = await fetch('https://api.example.com/data');
  const data = await response.json();
  return {
    props: {
      data,
    },
  };
}
export default ServerSideProps;
```

### Combining SSR with Static Site Generation (SSG)

Next.js also supports Static Site Generation (SSG), a similar technique where pages are pre-rendered at build time. You can combine SSR and SSG to achieve the best of both worlds, providing initial SSR for dynamic data and static rendering for content that doesn't change frequently.

### Conclusion

Server-Side Rendering with Next.js offers a powerful way to enhance performance, SEO, and user experience in your web applications. By delivering pre-rendered HTML content from the server, you can create fast and responsive pages that cater to a wide range of users. Whether you're building a blog, e-commerce site, or any other web application, leveraging Next.js's built-in SSR capabilities can provide a competitive edge in today's digital landscape.

#### 2. Virtualized Lists with react-virtualized

When dealing with long lists or grids, rendering every item can lead to performance issues. The `react-virtualized` library offers virtualization techniques to render only the visible items, significantly improving performance.

```JSX
import { List } from 'react-virtualized';
function VirtualizedListExample({ items }) {
  return (
    <List
      width={300}
      height={500}
      rowCount={items.length}
      rowHeight={50}
      rowRenderer={({ index, key, style }) => (
        <div key={key} style={style}>
          {items[index]}
        </div>
      )}
    />
  );
}
```

    <motion.div
      initial={{ opacity: 0 }}
      animate={{ opacity: 1 }}
      exit={{ opacity: 0 }}
    >
      {/* Your content goes here */}
    </motion.div>
  );
}
```
### Creating Page Transitions
Framer Motion simplifies page transitions using the `AnimatePresence` component. This component wraps your pages and handles the animations when a page enters or exits:
```jsx
import { motion, AnimatePresence } from 'framer-motion';

function App() {
  return (
    <AnimatePresence exitBeforeEnter>
      <motion.div
        key={pageKey}
        initial={{ opacity: 0 }}
        animate={{ opacity: 1 }}
        exit={{ opacity: 0 }}
      >
        {/* Content for the current page */}
      </motion.div>
    </AnimatePresence>
  );
}
```
### Adding Elegance with Variants
Framer Motion's `variants` feature allows you to define reusable animation presets for different states. This is especially useful for creating consistent transitions between various pages or elements:
```jsx
const pageVariants = {
  initial: { opacity: 0 },
  animate: { opacity: 1 },
  exit: { opacity: 0 },
};

function App() {
  return (
    <AnimatePresence exitBeforeEnter>
      <motion.div
        key={pageKey}
        variants={pageVariants}
        initial="initial"
        animate="animate"
        exit="exit"
      >
        {/* Content for the current page */}
      </motion.div>
    </AnimatePresence>
  );
}
```
### Conclusion
Page transitions are a crucial ingredient in creating immersive and delightful user experiences. Framer Motion empowers developers to easily integrate stunning animations into their applications, making navigation and content shifts engaging and seamless. By harnessing the power of Framer Motion's declarative syntax and versatile animations, you can elevate your web design to new heights and leave a lasting impression on your users.
### Introduction
In this blog post, we will walk through an example of using the OpenAI Swarm framework to create a multi-agent system. This system will include agents for fetching weather data and stock prices. We'll use the OpenWeatherMap API for weather data and the yfinance library for stock prices. Let's dive into the code step by step.
## Prerequisites
First, make sure you have the necessary libraries installed. You can install them using pip:
```yaml
pip install git+https://github.com/openai/swarm.git yfinance
```
Next, set your API keys as environment variables:
```jsx
OPENAI_API_KEY=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
OPENWEATHER_API_KEY=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
```
## Import Libraries
Start by importing the necessary libraries:
```python
import os
import requests
import yfinance as yf
from swarm import Swarm, Agent
```
## Initialize Swarm Client
Initialize the Swarm client:
```python
# Initialize Swarm client
client = Swarm()
```
## Load API Key
Load the OpenWeatherMap API key from the environment variable:
```python
# Load OpenWeatherMap API key from environment variable
API_KEY = os.getenv('OPENWEATHER_API_KEY')
if not API_KEY:
    raise ValueError("OPENWEATHER_API_KEY environment variable not set")

BASE_URL = "http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather"
```
## Fetch Weather Data
Define a function to fetch real weather data:
```python
# Function to fetch real weather data
def get_weather(location):
    print(f"Running weather function for {location}...")

    params = {
        "q": location,
        "appid": API_KEY,
        "units": "metric" # Change to 'imperial' for Fahrenheit
    }
    response = requests.get(BASE_URL, params=params)
    data = response.json()

    if response.status_code == 200:
        temperature = data['main']['temp']
        weather_description = data['weather'][0]['description']
        city_name = data['name']
        return f"The weather in {city_name} is {temperature}°C with {weather_description}."
    else:
        return f"Could not get the weather for {location}. Please try again."
```
## Fetch Stock Price
Define a function to fetch stock prices using yfinance:
```python
# Function to fetch stock price using yfinance
def get_stock_price(ticker):
    print(f"Running stock price function for {ticker}...")
    stock = yf.Ticker(ticker)
    stock_info = stock.history(period="1d")
    if not stock_info.empty:
        latest_price = stock_info['Close'].iloc[-1]
        return f"The latest stock price for {ticker} is {latest_price}."
    else:
        return f"Could not retrieve stock price for {ticker}."
```
## Transfer Functions
Define functions to transfer control between agents:
```python
# Function to transfer from manager agent to weather agent
def transfer_to_weather_assistant():
    print("Transferring to Weather Assistant...")
    return weather_agent

# Function to transfer from manager agent to stock price agent
def transfer_to_stockprice_assistant():
    print("Transferring to Stock Price Assistant...")
    return stockprice_agent
```
## Define Agents
Define the manager agent, weather agent, and stock price agent:
```python
# manager Agent
manager_agent = Agent(
    name="manager Assistant",
    instructions="You help users by directing them to the right assistant.",
    functions=[transfer_to_weather_assistant, transfer_to_stockprice_assistant],
)

# Weather Agent
weather_agent = Agent(
    name="Weather Assistant",
    instructions="You provide weather information for a given location using the provided tool",
    functions=[get_weather],
)

# Stock Price Agent
stockprice_agent = Agent(
    name="Stock Price Assistant",
    instructions="You provide the latest stock price for a given ticker symbol using the yfinance library.",
    functions=[get_stock_price],
)
```
## Run the Manager Agent
Run the manager agent to handle user queries:
```python
print("Running manager Assistant for Weather...")
response = client.run(
    agent=manager_agent,
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "What's the weather in New York?"}],
)
print(response.messages[-1]["content"])

# Example: User query handled by manager agent to get stock price
print("\nRunning manager Assistant for Stock Price...")
response = client.run(
    agent=manager_agent,
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Get me the stock price of AAPL."}],
)

print(response.messages[-1]["content"])
```
## Conclusion
This example demonstrates how to create a multi-agent system using the OpenAI Swarm framework. The manager agent directs user queries to the appropriate assistant agents, which then fetch and return the requested information. This setup allows for a modular and scalable approach to handling various types of user requests.
### Introduction
As I sat down to write about technology and management using artificial intelligence, I couldn't shake off a lingering thought: despite AI's astonishing capabilities, there's an unshakable feeling that something is missing. Each interaction with AI brings forth questions about this remarkable technology's true understanding or lack there of of human nuance. Is AI genuinely enhancing our writing, or is it merely shifting our approach to creativity and expression?
## Understanding the Machine That Understands Us
Every time I prompt an AI to generate content, the result feels flat and cold. Even when I request a more vibrant style, the AI adapts mechanically, lacking the spark that characterizes human writing. Over time, I've become adept at distinguishing between AI-generated text and human-authored content. Despite efforts to train the AI to produce more human-like prose, it never fully achieves the transformation.
Why can't AI simulate human writing? The answer seems to lie in the absence of subjectivity. Jacques Derrida noted that writing is a play of difference in meaning, always subject to interpretation based on historical and societal contexts. Devoid of personal experience and emotion, AI's writing lacks this dynamic quality. It doesn't anticipate human reactions beyond statistical predictions, resulting in content that feels inert and disconnected.
## AI Doesn't Replace Us; It Shifts Us
Proponents of AI often assert that it's here to assist, not replace us. They encourage embracing AI to accomplish tasks more efficiently. However, this assistance comes with unintended consequences. Writing this article without AI forced me to rely on my beliefs, draw from personal experiences, and engage deeply with new concepts. The process was immersive and intellectually stimulating.
Had I chosen to co-write with AI, much of this cognitive effort would have been bypassed. Research might have been reduced to passive editing of AI-generated generalities, lacking analytical depth or originality. This not only affects the quality of the output but also diminishes our learning process and critical thinking skills.
The dependency on AI echoes my reliance on calculators. Over time, I've noticed that basic arithmetic skills have dulled because I've offloaded that cognitive load onto machines. Similarly, habitual use of AI for writing could erode our ability to articulate complex thoughts and engage creatively with ideas.
## Balancing Efficiency and Authenticity
The rise of AI in writing presents a paradox. While it offers unparalleled efficiency, it simultaneously risks diluting the authenticity and richness of human expression. Hegel reminds us that contradiction fuels movement and vitality. In embracing AI, we must navigate the tension between technological advancement and the preservation of our creative autonomy.
So, how do we strike this balance? By viewing AI as a tool rather than a crutch. We can leverage its capabilities for mundane tasks while reserving the nuanced, subjective aspects of writing for ourselves. This approach ensures that we remain active participants in the creative process, retaining the depth and vibrancy that only human insight can provide.
## Conclusion
Artificial intelligence, despite its impressive advancements, cannot replicate the intricate tapestry of human thought and emotion inherent in writing. Our challenge is to harness the benefits of AI without allowing it to supplant the very qualities that make our work meaningful. By maintaining this balance, we can continue to engage deeply with the world of ideas, ensuring that our writing remains a true reflection of our unique perspectives.
Why Machines Can't Mimic Human Writing "Contradiction is the root of all movement and vitality; it is only insofar as something has a contradiction within it that it moves, has an urge and activity." - Hegel, Science of Logic
### Introduction
React hooks have revolutionized the way we build and manage stateful logic within functional components. While you might be familiar with the basics of hooks like `useState` and `useEffect`, there's a world of advanced hooks waiting to be harnessed for supercharging your React applications. In this post, we'll dive deep into mastering React hooks beyond the fundamentals, unlocking their true potential.
### Understanding the Power of Hooks
Hooks provide a clean and elegant way to handle complex state management and lifecycle behaviors. From managing local component state to handling side effects, hooks offer a concise and intuitive approach to building interactive and dynamic UIs.
### Advanced React Hooks You Need to Know
While you might be familiar with the basics of hooks like `useState` and `useEffect`, there's a world of advanced hooks waiting to be harnessed for supercharging your React applications. In this post, we'll dive deep into mastering React hooks beyond the fundamentals, unlocking their true potential.
#### 1. useReducer: Taking State Management to the Next Level
The `useReducer` hook is a powerful alternative to `useState` when dealing with more complex state logic. It's especially useful for managing state transitions that involve multiple actions. Here's an example of how you might use `useReducer`:
```JSX
import React, { useReducer } from 'react';

const initialState = { count: 0 };

function reducer(state, action) {
  switch (action.type) {
    case 'increment':
      return { count: state.count + 1 };
    case 'decrement':
      return { count: state.count - 1 };
    default:
      return state;
  }
}

function Counter() {
  const [state, dispatch] = useReducer(reducer, initialState);

  return (
    <div>
      Count: {state.count}
      <button onClick={() => dispatch({ type: 'increment' })}>Increment</button>
      <button onClick={() => dispatch({ type: 'decrement' })}>Decrement</button>
    </div>
  );
}
```
#### 2. useContext and useMemo: Efficient Contextual Data Sharing
The `useContext` hook allows you to access context directly without prop drilling. By combining it with `useMemo`, you can optimize performance when the context value changes infrequently. Here's an example of using `useContext`:
```JSX
import React, { useContext } from 'react';

const ThemeContext = React.createContext();

function ThemedButton() {
  const theme = useContext(ThemeContext);
  return <button style={{ backgroundColor: theme }}>Themed Button</button>;
}
```
#### 3. Custom Hooks: Reusable Logic for Improved Composition
Custom hooks allow you to encapsulate and reuse logic across multiple components. Let's create a custom hook for managing form state:
```JSX
import React, { useState } from 'react';

function useForm(initialValues) {
  const [values, setValues] = useState(initialValues);

  function handleChange(event) {
    const { name, value } = event.target;
    setValues((prevValues) => ({ ...prevValues, [name]: value }));
  }

  return { values, handleChange };
}
```
### Crafting Effective UIs with Hook Combinations
The real magic of mastering React hooks lies in combining them intelligently to create elegant and performant UIs. We'll explore scenarios where multiple hooks collaborate seamlessly to achieve intricate behaviors without sacrificing simplicity.
Mastering React Hooks
### Most companies have a ton of valuable data internally. This could be analytics data on your customers interactions with your product. This could be an audit log of actions taken within the product (which is another way to see when different features are enabled).
Even if you are a small startup, you likely have valuable data in the form of support tickets which can show you the areas of the product that need the most attention. You also likely have feature requests scattered throughout those support tickets.
Pre-LLMs, trying to extract insights from any data required specialized knowledge. You often needed to train your own model, which meant feature engineering & NLP, choosing a model, and most onerous of all… gathering your own training data.
Nowadays, you can just write a prompt like:
> *Categorize the following ticket using these categories: Uptime, Security, Bug, Feature Request, Other*
>
> *{put ticket here}*
And voila, you have a classifier and it’s probably decent without much tuning (although you absolutely should modify it).
# **What we’re building today**
Users should be able to:
- Log in, so we know who they are and what data they have access to
- Write a prompt. In this case, it’s for a ticket classification system.
- Test the prompt on some sample data and see the output (including errors).
- Save the prompt for others to use.
# **Step 1: Loading and visualizing our data**
What good is a data application without data? To get a sense for what we can do, let’s start by hard coding some data:
```JSX
import streamlit as st

def load_data_sample():
    return pd.DataFrame(
        {
            "Ticket": [
                "I cant log into my account, it keeps sayin "invalid credentials." I know the password is correct tho.",
                # ...
            ],
        }
    )

# Load the data
data = load_data_sample()
# render it as a table
st.dataframe(data, use_container_width=True, hide_index=True)
```
Streamlit does have built in support for a number of data sources. For example, if we wanted to connect to Postgres, we’d first tell Streamlit how to connect to our Postgres database via the `.streamlit/secrets.toml` file:
```JSX
[connections.postgresql]
dialect = "postgresql"
host = "localhost"
port = "5432"
database = "xxx"
username = "xxx"
password = "xxx"
```
We’d install `pip install psycopg2-binary` (which is needed to connect to Postgres).
And then we can update our `load_data_sample()` function:
```JSX
def load_data_sample():
    conn = st.connection("postgresql", type="sql")
    # Results are cached for 5 min
    return conn.query('SELECT description as Ticket FROM tickets;', ttl="5m")
```
Similarly, we can connect to [Snowflake](https://docs.streamlit.io/develop/tutorials/databases/snowflake?ref=propelauth.com) or even a [Google sheet](https://docs.streamlit.io/develop/tutorials/databases/private-gsheet?ref=propelauth.com). It’ll always end up as a dataframe that we can easily visualize.
**A brief note on caching**
The `query` call has a built-in caching mechanism in the form of a TTL. There are however, two other options for caching: [st.cache_resource](https://docs.streamlit.io/develop/api-reference/caching-and-state/st.cache_resource?ref=propelauth.com) and [st.cache_data](https://docs.streamlit.io/develop/api-reference/caching-and-state/st.cache_data?ref=propelauth.com).
`cache_resource` is commonly used for caching connections so you can use it for caching the database connection or for the OpenAI client that we’ll construct later on.
`cache_data` is commonly used for caching the result of expensive queries. You can annotate the `load_data_sample` function which will speed up subsequent requests to load it.
# **Step 2: Running our data through the prompt**
We started by taking in a prompt from the user. Then we loaded the data. Now it’s time to execute the prompt on that data.
For us, we’re going to ask our users to make sure their prompt outputs valid JSON with the form:
```JSX
{
    "urgent": false,
    "categories": ["CategoryA", "CategoryB"]
}
```
We can do a fairly simple transformation of our dataframe which adds 3 columns: `urgent`, `categories` , and `error` (in the event that something went wrong).
```JSX
@st.cache_data
def classify_ticket(ticket):
    # Construct an OpenAI client
    openai_key = st.secrets["openai_key"]
    openai_client = OpenAI(api_key=openai_key)

    # Format the prompt to include the ticket
    response = openai_client.chat.completions.create(
        messages=[{"role": "user", "content": prompt.format(text=ticket)}],
        model="gpt-4o-mini",
    )
    response = response.choices[0].message.content
    if response is None:
        return {"error": "No response from OpenAI"}

try:
        response = json.loads(response)
    except json.JSONDecodeError:
        return {"error": "Invalid JSON in response"}
    if "urgent" not in response:
        return {"error": "No 'urgent' field in response"}
    if "categories" not in response:
        return {"error": "No 'categories' field in response"}
    return response

def modify_data_to_include_classification(data):
    for i, row in data.iterrows():
        text = row["Ticket"]
        response = classify_ticket(text)
        data.at[i, "Categories"] = response.get("categories")
        data.at[i, "Urgent"] = response.get("urgent")
        data.at[i, "Error"] = response.get("error")
```
Easy enough! The big question now is… how frequently do we want this to run? We’ve cached the most expensive part of this (both time and money-wise), which is the call to OpenAI.
But, we want to be careful to not run this every time someone makes a small change to the prompt. The easiest fix? Let’s just add a button to trigger the re-running of the prompt on the data.
Streamlit makes this really easy:
```JSX
data = load_data_sample()
if st.button("Test Prompt"):
    modify_data_to_include_classification(data)
st.dataframe(data, use_container_width=True, hide_index=True)
```
`st.button` will return True when the button is clicked and will modify the Dataframe to add new columns. A user that has never clicked `Test Prompt` will see just the unclassified sample data for inspiration.
And that’s… most of it!
A user can open up our app, view some sample data, write a prompt, and see the results of running that prompt on the sample data. The only thing that’s a bit scary, is we haven’t added any authentication. Any user can interact with our data and we don’t know who wrote which prompts.
# **Step 3: Adding authentication**
One quirk of Streamlit today is that authentication is difficult. The out of the box options aren’t great for a company building an internal app, where you might want sign in with Okta or Azure via SSO/SAML or you might want to make sure 2FA is required before using the application.
[PropelAuth](https://www.propelauth.com/?ref=propelauth.com) is a great fit here as PropelAuth provides full authentication UIs that you can use directly with Streamlit.
Looking to set up a really basic application with just email and password login? The code will look like this:
```JSX
user = auth.get_user()
if user is None:
    st.error('Unauthorized')
    st.stop()

st.write('Logged in as ', user.email)
```
Looking to set up an advanced application that requires users to log in via SAML? The code snippet is the same!
For a full guide on how to get started, check out our documentation [here](https://docs.propelauth.com/guides-and-examples/guides/streamlit-authentication?ref=propelauth.com#installation-and-initialization). The gist is that we will create a file `propelauth.py` which will export an `auth` object.
At the top of our script, we just need to make sure we can load the user or stop the rest of the script from running. We can then user the user’s ID in any of queries to the data to make sure they are only seeing data they have access to.
```JSX
from propelauth import auth

# Is this a valid user? If not, make sure the script stops
user = auth.get_user()
if user is None:
    st.error('Unauthorized')
    st.stop()
st.write('Logged in as ', user.email)
# ...
def load_data_sample(user_id):
    conn = st.connection("postgresql", type="sql")
    return conn.query(
        'SELECT description as Ticket FROM tickets WHERE user_id = :user_id;',
        params={"user_id": user_id}
        ttl="0"
    )
data = load_data_sample(user.user_id)
```
# **Step 4: Saving the prompt**
As an optional last step — let’s say we wanted to provide a way for users to save their prompts. We can re-use basically everything we’ve learned so far and make this really easy:
```JSX
if st.button("Save Prompt"):
    conn = load_connection() # e.g. st.connection("postgresql", type="sql")
    with conn.session as session:
        session.execute(
            "INSERT INTO prompts (user_id, prompt) VALUES (:user_id, :prompt);",
            {"user_id": user.user_id, "prompt": prompt}
        )
        session.commit()
    st.write("Saved!")
```
# **Summary**
In this guide, we’ve explored how to build powerful internal AI tools using Streamlit. We’ve covered loading and visualizing data, running prompts on that data, adding authentication with PropelAuth, and even saving user-generated prompts. By leveraging these techniques, you can create robust, secure, and interactive data applications that harness the power of AI for your organization’s specific needs.
In this post, we’ll look at how you can use Streamlit to build an internal tool that allows anyone at the company to experiment with using LLMs on top of any dataset you give access to.
### Introduction
In the realm of modern web development, creating robust and efficient backend APIs is essential for building dynamic and interactive web applications. Next.js, a popular React framework, introduces a powerful feature known as API Routes. This feature allows developers to seamlessly create serverless API endpoints within their Next.js projects. In this guide, we'll delve into the world of Next.js API Routes, exploring their benefits, implementation, and use cases that enable you to build versatile and performant web APIs.
### The Power of Next.js API Routes
API Routes in Next.js bridge the gap between frontend and backend development, providing a convenient way to handle server-side logic without the need for a separate backend server. This approach simplifies the development process and promotes efficient resource utilization.
### Getting Started with API Routes
Creating an API Route in Next.js is as simple as creating a file in the `pages/api` directory. For instance, to create an endpoint at `/api/hello`, you would create the file `pages/api/hello.js`:
```javascript
// pages/api/hello.js
export default function handler(req, res) {
  res.status(200).json({ message: 'Hello, API Route!' });
}
```
### Handling Different HTTP Methods
Next.js API Routes allow you to handle various HTTP methods such as GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE using different functions in your route file:
```javascript
// pages/api/posts.js
export default function handler(req, res) {
  if (req.method === 'GET') {
    // Handle GET request
  } else if (req.method === 'POST') {
    // Handle POST request
  } else {
    res.status(405).json({ error: 'Method not allowed' });
  }
}
```
### Fetching Data from API Routes
API Routes can also serve as data sources for your frontend components. You can use the `fetch` API or libraries like `axios` to fetch data from your API endpoints:
```jsx
// components/Posts.js
import { useEffect, useState } from 'react';

const Posts = () => {
  const [posts, setPosts] = useState([]);

  useEffect(() => {
    fetch('/api/posts')
      .then((response) => response.json())
      .then((data) => setPosts(data));
  }, []);

  return (
    <div>
      {posts.map((post) => (
        <div key={post.id}>{post.title}</div>
      ))}
    </div>
  );
};
```
### Real-World Use Cases
1.  **Authentication Endpoints**: Implement user authentication and token generation directly within your Next.js app.
2.  **Data Fetching**: Fetch data from external APIs, databases, or CMSs and serve it to your frontend components.
3.  **Form Handling**: Handle form submissions and data processing without the need for a separate backend server.
### Deployment and Hosting
When deploying your Next.js app with API Routes, the routes are automatically deployed alongside your frontend. You can host your app on platforms like Vercel, Netlify, or your own server.
### Conclusion
Next.js API Routes bring backend logic closer to your frontend development process. With the ability to create serverless API endpoints directly within your Next.js app, you can build powerful and efficient APIs that serve data, handle forms, and more. By leveraging the simplicity and convenience of API Routes, you're equipped to create versatile web applications that seamlessly integrate frontend and backend functionalities, providing a unified user experience and streamlined development process.
### Introduction
In the era of diverse screen sizes and devices, creating a consistent and visually appealing user experience across different platforms is a top priority for web developers. Tailwind CSS, a utility-first framework, empowers you to build responsive web designs efficiently and effectively. In this guide, we'll explore the art of responsive design with Tailwind CSS, showcasing how you can create fluid and adaptable layouts that seamlessly adapt to various screen sizes and orientations.
### The Need for Responsive Design
Responsive design ensures that your web application looks and functions beautifully on devices of all shapes and sizes, from large desktop monitors to tiny mobile screens. With the ever-growing variety of devices, responsive design has become a necessity to provide an inclusive and user-friendly experience.
### Embracing Tailwind CSS for Responsive Design
Tailwind CSS simplifies responsive design by providing a set of responsive utility classes that you can apply directly to your HTML elements. These classes enable you to control the behavior of your components across different breakpoints without writing custom CSS.
### Using Responsive Breakpoints
Tailwind CSS defines several breakpoints based on common device sizes. These breakpoints allow you to adjust your design according to different screen sizes. The predefined breakpoints are:
*   `sm`: Small screens (640px and up)
*   `md`: Medium screens (768px and up)
*   `lg`: Large screens (1024px and up)
*   `xl`: Extra-large screens (1280px and up)
You can use these breakpoints in your class definitions to create responsive designs:
```html
<div class="bg-blue-500 sm:bg-green-500 md:bg-yellow-500 lg:bg-red-500 xl:bg-purple-500">
  Responsive Background
</div>
```
### Responsive Display and Visibility
### Introduction
Next.js, a popular React framework, offers built-in routing capabilities that make navigation between pages seamless and efficient. In this post, we'll dive into the world of routing in Next.js, exploring how to set up routes, handle dynamic routing, and create a smooth navigation experience for your web applications.
### Understanding Next.js Routing
Next.js simplifies routing by using the file system as the basis for your routes. Each `.js` or `.tsx` file in the `pages` directory becomes a route. For example, a file named `about.js` within the `pages` directory will automatically create a route at `/about`.
### Creating Basic Routes
To create basic routes, all you need to do is organize your files in the `pages` directory. For instance:
- `pages/index.js` - Represents the home page accessible at the root URL (`/`).
- `pages/about.js` - Corresponds to the about page (`/about`).
### Dynamic Routing
Next.js supports dynamic routing, allowing you to create dynamic URLs with parameters. Simply create a file with square brackets in the `pages` directory, like `[id].js`, and you can access the `id` parameter using the `useRouter` hook:
```JSX
import { useRouter } from 'next/router';

function DynamicPage() {
  const router = useRouter();
  const { id } = router.query;

  return <div>Dynamic Page with ID: {id}</div>;
}
```
### Navigating Between Pages
Next.js provides the `Link` component for client-side navigation between pages, improving the user experience by avoiding full page reloads. Here's an example of how to use it:
```JSX
import Link from 'next/link';

function Navigation() {
  return (
    <nav>
      <Link href="/">
        <a>Home</a>
      </Link>
      <Link href="/about">
        <a>About</a>
      </Link>
    </nav>
  );
}
```
### Programmatic Routing
For programmatic navigation, Next.js offers the `useRouter` hook and the `router` object. You can use them to navigate programmatically based on events or user interactions:
```JSX
import { useRouter } from 'next/router';

function RedirectToAbout() {
  const router = useRouter();

  const handleButtonClick = () => {
    router.push('/about');
  };

  return <button onClick={handleButtonClick}>Go to About Page</button>;
}
```
### Advanced Routing Techniques
Next.js also supports more advanced routing scenarios like nested routes, custom 404 pages, and custom server routing using the `next.config.js` file. These techniques allow you to fine-tune your routing behavior to match your application's needs.
### Conclusion
Mastering routing in Next.js is essential for building well-organized and navigable web applications. By understanding basic routing, dynamic routes, navigation components, and programmatic navigation, you can create a smooth and enjoyable user experience. As you delve into more advanced routing techniques, you'll be equipped to create even more complex and dynamic applications using Next.js.
3.  **Composition**: Compose complex components by combining smaller ones. This promotes modular and maintainable code.
### Example: Reusable Button Component
Let's create a simple example of a reusable button component:
```JSX
// Button.js
import React from 'react';

const Button = ({ label, onClick, color }) => {
  return (
    <button
      className={`bg-${color}-500 text-white px-4 py-2 rounded-md`}
      onClick={onClick}
    >
      {label}
    </button>
  );
};

export default Button;
```
```JSX
// App.js
import React from 'react';
import Button from './Button';

function App() {
  const handleClick = () => {
    console.log('Button clicked');
  };

  return (
    <div>
      <Button label="Click me" onClick={handleClick} color="blue" />
    </div>
  );
}

export default App;
```
### Best Practices
1.  **Keep Components Focused**: Each component should have a clear and specific purpose.
2.  **Avoid Over-Engineering**: Don't make components too complex. Aim for simplicity and clarity.
3.  **Document Components**: Provide clear documentation and examples for using your reusable components.
### Conclusion
Reusable components in React are a cornerstone of efficient and maintainable code. By designing components with a single responsibility, using props for customization, and embracing the principles of abstraction and composition, you can create a library of building blocks that streamline your development process.
